Antibacterial agents for automotive plastic components

05-10-2026

Automobile plastic components - dashboards, door panels, steering wheels, gearshift levers, seat adjustment parts, air conditioning vents, storage compartments - are the components that passengers and drivers come into contact with most frequently. These components are in close contact with human sweat, dander, and moisture in the enclosed car environment, and their surfaces are highly prone to the growth of microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Aspergillus niger. Especially during the rainy season in the south or when the air conditioning system is used for a long time, the high humidity and enclosed environment inside the car provide ideal conditions for microbial reproduction, resulting in unpleasant odors and mold spots on the surface of the interior components. This not only affects the driving and riding experience but also may pose a health hazard to sensitive individuals.

Adding special antibacterial agents to the injection molding raw materials of automobile plastic components, giving the products a lasting antibacterial ability from the material source, is the mainstream technical path for the quality upgrade of the automotive industry. Tianshi Lantian has launched a special antibacterial solution for automobile plastic components based on the processing characteristics of the components. With the core technology of silver-zinc composite slow-release technology, it is suitable for mainstream automotive plastic substrates such as PP, ABS, PC/ABS, and PVC, with an antibacterial rate of ≥ 99.9% and a mold resistance level of 0 grade, which is safe, environmentally friendly, and complies with RoHS/REACH and automotive industry standards.

01 Why do automobile plastic components need special antibacterial agents

Microbial risks faced by automobile interiors

Automobile plastic components are under multiple microbial threats in the enclosed, humid, and frequently used environment:

Enclosed cabin environment promotes growth: The cabin space is relatively closed, and the operation of the air conditioning system increases humidity, and the surfaces of components such as dashboards and door panels are prone to adsorbing water vapor and organic substances, providing conditions for the reproduction of bacteria and mold.

High-frequency contact transmission risk: Components such as steering wheels, gearshift levers, and door handles are frequently touched by passengers and drivers every day, and the residual sweat and skin cells on the palms serve as "nutrients" for microbial reproduction. Interior components without antibacterial functions may become a medium for bacterial transmission.

Material characteristics provide breeding conditions: Organic components such as the butadiene rubber phase in ABS and the plasticizers in PVC may become breeding grounds for microorganisms in a humid and hot environment.

Industry standards and testing requirements

The automotive industry has increasingly strict requirements for the antibacterial performance of interior materials. Some OEMs have proposed clear antibacterial performance requirements for interior plastic parts, with an antibacterial rate of ≥ 99% (based on GB/T 31402 or ISO 22196 standards) and a mold resistance level of 0 grade (ASTM G21 standard).

Consequences of not adding antibacterial agents

Bacterial growth: The surface of the interior components becomes a breeding ground for pathogenic bacteria, which may be transmitted through contact.

Odor generation: The metabolic activities of bacteria release odor substances, affecting the air quality inside the car.

Mold spot generation: Mold can reproduce on the surface in a high-humidity environment, causing the interior components to change color and suffer damage to their appearance.

Insufficient product competitiveness: Ordinary automobile plastic components lack antibacterial functions and are difficult to meet consumers' demands for a healthy cabin.

02 Core technical requirements for antibacterial agents used in automobile plastic components

Adaptability of processing technology

The injection molding temperatures of automobile plastic components vary significantly depending on the substrate: PP is approximately 200-240°C, ABS is approximately 200-240°C, PC/ABS is approximately 240-260°C, and PA can reach 260-280°C. The antibacterial agent must withstand this high temperature without decomposition, color change, or loss of effectiveness. Tianshi Lantian's antibacterial agent has a decomposition temperature > 500°C, suitable for the entire processing temperature range of automobile plastics.

Compatibility of the system and performance retention

Automobile plastic components have high requirements for surface gloss, dimensional stability, and mechanical properties. The antibacterial agent must be fully compatible with the substrate, without causing appearance defects such as white spots or blemishes, and not affecting the impact strength, heat resistance, and dimensional accuracy of the components. For appearance components such as dashboards, the antibacterial agent must not affect the texture effect and color difference on the surface.

Weather resistance requirements

The automotive interior components are exposed to light and temperature changes for a long time. The antibacterial agent must have excellent weather resistance and not fail or change color due to long-term exposure to light and heat. Tianshi Blue Shield antibacterial agent shows extremely low attenuation in the UV aging test, meeting the requirements for automotive interior weather resistance.

Safety and Compliance Requirements

The automotive interior components come into contact with the human body for a long time and must meet the RoHS, REACH and VOC control requirements of the automotive industry. The product has no heavy metals, low VOC, no irritating odor, and the acute oral toxicity LD50 > 5000mg/kg, belonging to the actual non-toxic level.
