Water-based VAE emulsion specific sterilization and anti-corrosion solution: Full-cycle protection from inside the tank to the end application
VAE emulsion (acrylic vinyl-ethylene copolymer emulsion) is a high-molecular emulsion formed by copolymerization of vinyl acetate and ethylene monomers through a high-pressure emulsion polymerization method. With excellent adhesion, film-forming properties, weather resistance, and environmental protection characteristics, VAE emulsion is widely used in adhesives, coatings, building waterproofing, textile processing, papermaking, etc. However, VAE emulsion uses water as the dispersion medium and is rich in organic substances. During production, storage, and transportation, it is highly susceptible to bacterial, yeast, and mold invasion, resulting in emulsion spoilage, stratification, viscosity reduction, odor generation, and even complete batch product scrapping.
Dalian Tianwei Chemical Co.,Ltd has launched a dedicated sterilization and anti-corrosion solution for the VAE emulsion system, focusing on broad-spectrum efficiency, system compatibility, and safety and environmental protection. It provides full-cycle microbial protection from emulsion polymerization to product storage, helping VAE emulsion manufacturers ensure product quality and shelf life.
01 Why VAE emulsion requires a dedicated sterilization and anti-corrosion agent
Microbial risks of VAE emulsion
During the production and use of VAE emulsion, it faces multiple microbial threats:
Water-based system prone to contamination: VAE emulsion uses water as the dispersion medium. During the production process, a large amount of water, emulsifiers, stabilizers, and other components are used, which are ideal substrates for microbial growth. After emulsion polymerization, if there is no appropriate anti-corrosion protection, microorganisms can rapidly multiply.
Risk during storage and transportation: During storage or transportation of VAE emulsion, if the environmental temperature and humidity are suitable (especially in the summer high-temperature season), bacteria, yeast, and molds can rapidly multiply in the emulsion, causing the emulsion to stink, pH to drop, viscosity to decrease sharply, and surface to form a crust. The product description of Silanes VAE emulsion also states that to appropriately protect the product, appropriate preservatives should be added after the first opening and when stored in an opened container to avoid microbial erosion.
Pollution introduced during production: Although the emulsion polymerization process is carried out at a high temperature, the production water, monomers, additives, and equipment pipelines may carry microorganisms. If there is no effective internal tank anti-corrosion protection, the pollution risk persists.
Consequences without preservatives
Spoilage and deterioration: Microorganisms decompose the organic substances in the emulsion, resulting in a decrease in pH, the production of sour odors, emulsion stratification
Varying viscosity: Microbial metabolic products disrupt the stability of the emulsion, causing viscosity to decrease or abnormally thicken
Mold growth and algae proliferation: Surface appears mold spots or green algae, especially in water-based systems, where green algae contamination is more common
Complete batch scrapping: Once the emulsion is contaminated, the spoilage rate is fast, often resulting in the scrapping of the entire batch of products, causing significant economic losses
Downstream application risks: The emulsion that has deteriorated may cause problems such as decreased construction performance and poor water resistance in the formed coating
02 Technical requirements for VAE emulsion-specific preservatives
The VAE emulsion formulation is complex, with a pH typically ranging from 4 to 7, and contains emulsifiers, stabilizers, and various other additives. The ideal VAE emulsion preservative should meet the following conditions:
1.Broad-spectrum and highly effective: Has strong inhibitory and killing effects on bacteria, yeast, and molds, effectively addressing various microbial contamination commonly found in VAE emulsion. Industry data shows that isothiazolinone preservatives have broad-spectrum efficacy for PVA and VAE polymer emulsions, effectively killing common bacteria and molds.
2.System compatibility:Is compatible with emulsifiers, thickeners, and other components in the VAE emulsion formulation, does not cause flocculation, stratification, or demulsification, and does not affect the viscosity, solid content, and film-forming performance of the emulsion.
3.Temperature stability: Suitable for temperature changes during emulsion polymerization, cooling, storage, and use, maintaining activity.
