Tent fabric is the core material of outdoor tents. It is exposed to damp, rainy, and temperature variation environments for a long time, facing severe mold growth challenges. Tent fabric is usually composed of base fabric (such as polyester, nylon, etc.) and functional coatings (such as water-based PU coatings, PVC coatings, etc.). The coatings give tent fabric waterproof and tear-resistant properties, but they also bring new risks - the organic substances in the coating materials are easily turned into moldy fungi like Aspergillus niger and Penicillium in the damp environment. Tent fabric coatings with anti-mold agents show significant improvement in anti-mold and anti-bacterial performance, with inhibition rates of over 99%.

01 Mold growth risk and anti-mold requirements of tent fabric

Why is tent fabric prone to mold growth

Tent fabric faces dual mold growth risks, mainly due to its "base fabric + coating" composite structure:

Base fabric absorbs moisture to provide humidity conditions: The base fabric of tent fabric (such as polyester, nylon, etc.) has a porous fiber structure, which easily absorbs water vapor in the outdoor high-humidity environment (relative humidity > 90%) and provides humidity conditions for mold growth. Nylon fabric, due to its molecular structure containing amide bonds, is more prone to be decomposed by mold, with a mold growth probability 2.3 times that of polyester.

Coatings provide nutrients: The plasticizers, resins, and additives in the water-based PU coating and PVC coating formulations become carbon sources for mold reproduction in the damp environment. Industry standards stipulate that the anti-mold level of tent fabric must reach 0 (no visible mold growth) to meet the requirements for outdoor use.

Anti-mold level standards

The anti-mold performance of tent fabric is mainly tested according to GB/T 24346-2025 "Evaluation of Anti-Mold Performance of Textiles" and ASTM G21-2015 standards. Anti-mold levels are divided into 0-4 grades:

0 grade: No visible mold growth under a microscope - the highest safety standard for outdoor tent fabric

1 grade: Scattered mold spots, coverage rate about 15%

2 grade: Mold spots cover 30%-40%

The standard particularly emphasizes that the 0 grade determination must meet two conditions: no visible mold growth under the naked eye and no residual mycelia after wiping with 75% ethanol.


02 Anti-mold solution design for tent fabric

Dual-path protection strategy

Tent fabric anti-mold should cover both the base fabric and the coating layers:

Path one: Base fabric antibacterial treatment (post-treatment): By immersing or spraying, apply antibacterial finishing agents on the base fabric to give the fibers their own antibacterial ability. The selection of textile coating anti-mold agents should be targeted based on the coating material system, usage environment, and anti-mold requirements.


Path two: Adding anti-mold agents to water-based PU or PVC coatings: Add anti-mold agents directly during the formulation of water-based PU or PVC coating pastes, making the antibacterial components evenly distributed within the coating and forming a long-lasting anti-mold barrier.

The use of both paths together can achieve full structural protection for tent fabric from fibers to coatings, with an anti-mold level of 0.
